Short answer

School costs in Dubai are read per school year on the KHDA Fee Fact Sheet, not as a city-wide rate. This briefing shows what to compare, with one dated tuition example.

This is an orientation answer, not advice for an individual case.

Private schools in Dubai sit under the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). Tuition and mandatory extras appear per academic year on that school’s School Fees Fact Sheet. The sheet is valid for one school year and is the primary source — not a blog list, not “what Brits pay”, and not one figure for the whole city.

Dated example, not a family budget: Dubai British School published AED 60,608 tuition for YEAR3–YEAR6 for 2025–2026. Source: school PDF, used as a research starting point on 17 September 2026. That is not a KHDA city rate and not a forecast for 2026–2027.

KHDA and the Fee Fact Sheet

KHDA states that every private school has a Fact Sheet covering mandatory and optional fees, discounts and scholarships where they apply. Parents find it via the KHDA directory, with the parent/school contract, and on the school website. Mandatory tuition (including application, enrolment and re-enrolment, per KHDA’s parent guidance) is regulated; bus, uniform (unless the school supplies it), trips and extra-curriculars often are not in the same way.

Read the school year on the sheet (for example 2025–2026) and scan the QR if there is one. A rate from another year or another emirate’s regulator (Abu Dhabi ADEK, and so on) is a different system.

What tuition does not cover

Ask in writing for:

  • application / assessment / registration / re-enrolment;
  • books, devices, exam fees;
  • school bus (route, deposit, notice);
  • uniform and sports kit;
  • trips, clubs, learning support;
  • sibling discount — only if it is on the Fact Sheet;
  • what happens on a mid-year arrival or departure.

Without those rules, “AED 60,608” is an incomplete sentence.

Compare in five steps

  1. Filter on the curriculum and year group your child needs, not on brand reputation.
  2. Download two Fact Sheets for the same school year.
  3. Add mandatory fees to a year-1 total and a year-2 total (re-enrolment).
  4. Add optionals you are likely to take (bus).
  5. Visit the campus; a PDF says nothing about the rush-hour drive.

KHDA ratings and inspection reports are public; treat them as one input, not as an award invented here.

Worked example: two children

Worked example. Assumptions: two children in YEAR3 and YEAR5; you use the DBS 2025–2026 YEAR3–YEAR6 tuition figure only as an illustration of one school band, plus assumed extras.

  • Tuition 2 × 60,608 = AED 121,216
  • Registration/re-enrolment (assumption; ask the Fact Sheet) AED 4,000
  • Bus for two children (assumption) AED 12,000
  • Uniform/books (assumption) AED 3,000

Illustration sum: AED 140,216 for that school year, before trips and lunch. If a second school’s Fact Sheet shows AED 40,000 tuition per child, the sum falls structurally. That is why school choice belongs in the family budget before the lease is signed.

Area, visa and waiting lists

Do not sign an annual lease in a community whose school you want is full. Combine the school shortlist with renting and the neighbourhood method. The child’s visa status must match at enrolment; that is a GDRFA/ICA question, not a KHDA rate. Visa, relocating.

Help: Relocation.

Enrolment: order and documents

Schools typically ask for passport, visa or visa application, recent reports, vaccinations, and sometimes an assessment. Without a visa track you can sit on a waiting list and still lose the place. Start the paperwork in parallel with the lease, not after. KHDA regulates Dubai private schools; a school in Abu Dhabi follows ADEK — do not mix the sheets.

Ask the notice and refund rules before you pay the registration fee. Mid-year arrival may be pro-rated or a full year; only the Fact Sheet and the school contract count.

Bus routes decide whether you need a second car. A “cheaper” school 45 minutes away in the peak costs two working adults’ time. Time the drive yourself at 07:15, not on Saturday.

Worked example: time: 40 extra minutes each way × 180 school days × 2 = 240 hours a year on that route. That is six working weeks. The Fact Sheet does not show it.

FAQ

Is AED 60,608 “normal” in Dubai? It is one school, one year-band, one year. The KHDA directory shows hundreds of schools with other bands. Download two sheets.

Does a Dutch Cito or a Belgian school board count? Dubai schools have their own admissions. Bring reports; do not expect automatic placement.

If the school says no

Keep a second school in a second area until the place is in writing. Temporary rent is dearer per month and cheaper than a year in the wrong community. Save every Fact Sheet as a dated PDF. In a fee dispute that sheet is the primary source, not the tour.

Additional support

Learning support, extra languages and exam fees often sit apart from tuition. Ask whether KHDA classifies those lines as mandatory or optional on this year's sheet. A child who needs support changes the sum more than the area name.

Do not pay a registration fee before you have read the refund rule if the visa is refused. A fee that sticks while the child cannot start belongs in the family budget’s risk scenario.
